BREAKING THE SILENCE: GENDERED CORRUPTION, POWER, AND PUBLIC TRUTH

Donor: Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Luxembourg)
Duration: January - December 2026

Building on the research findings and previous engagement with local journalists as part of the Breaking the Silence: GENDERED CORRUPTION, POWER, AND MEDIA FREEDOM project,  the project focuses on strengthening public awareness, community engagement and youth participation, with particular attention to young audiences as future media workers, critical media consumers and active citizens.

After examining the gendered challenges within the newsroom and gender-based violence and harassment directed against women journalists, the advocacy and institutional engagement component of this project strengthens prevention by promoting accountability and encouraging better policies and practices regarding online harassment and violence against women journalists.

Overall Objectives:

  • To increase public awareness of the structural challenges faced by local journalism, with a focus on how corruption, abuse of power and gendered dynamics undermine media freedom and public trust;
  • To rebuild trust between journalists and local communities through people-centred storytelling and direct engagement;
  • To strengthen young people’s understanding of corruption as a systemic and gendered phenomenon, while equipping them with critical media literacy, ethical journalism skills and tools for responsible storytelling that support local accountability and public interest reporting.
  • To promote gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches to media production and representation.
